Baćac - Vina z Kukurini

The Eastern Istrian wine-growing region is the smallest of the three wine regions in the Croatian part of Istria. In this picturesque area, where the sea breeze meets the fresh mountain air, viticulture has been an integral part of the local people's tradition and identity for centuries. During the mid-20th century, migration from rural areas led to the abandonment of many vineyards. Today, however, a new generation of winemakers is gradually restoring the vineyards and contributing to the development of wine tourism.

One of the finest examples of modern winemaking in this region is the Baćac family winery, located in the village of Kukurini, not far from the medieval hilltop town of Pićan. The winery is now run by Goran Baćac, the fourth generation of winemakers in his family.

Today, the winery cultivates four hectares of its own vineyards and also sources grapes from trusted local growers, producing approximately 40,000 bottles of wine annually. The vineyards are planted on the region's characteristic white soil, on gentle slopes at an altitude of around 300 metres above sea level.

The main varieties grown are Malvazija Istarska, which accounts for about half of the production, along with Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Yellow Muscat (Muškat žuti). The wines are marketed under the brand "Vina z Kukurini" ("Wines from Kukurini").

The winery's young Malvazija Istarska is its most sought-after label, closely followed by the red blend Calypsa Nera, while their Yellow Muscat is especially popular among female wine lovers.

Adjacent to the winery is a spacious, newly renovated tasting hall with capacity for up to 100 guests. Visitors can enjoy guided tastings or group visits, during which Baćac wines are paired with local delicacies such as regional cheeses and cured meats. A particular highlight is the traditional Istrian pastry kroštule, served alongside the winery's Yellow Muscat.
