At the heart of the novel's setting lies the village of Filipana, located halfway between Rakalj and Vodnjan, where the Diković family has lived for generations. Over the past sixty years, the need for employment led part of the family to move to the city, leaving the land behind. Nevertheless, they regularly returned to the village to cultivate their vineyards and fields.
A descendant of the family, young winemaker David Diković, decided to return to his ancestral home in 2015 after completing his education and gaining experience at several renowned wineries. Determined to continue the family's tradition, he established his own winery. His first wine, a young Malvazija Istarska from the 2017 vintage, marked the debut of Diković wines on the market and introduced the winery to the wider wine community.
With the support of his family, David transformed an old barn into a modern boutique winery featuring a small tasting room and wine shop. Today, the winery cultivates 3 hectares of vineyards, with a smaller portion managed in cooperation with trusted local growers.
The vineyards are predominantly planted with Malvazija Istarska and Refošk, a variety that has proven particularly well suited to this part of Istria. They are situated at the Boška micro-location, in the hamlet of Taškerovi Dvori near Filipana.
Today, the winery's portfolio consists of four wine labels: two fresh-style wines and two aged wines. The flagship wine is the young Malvazija Istarska, followed by the aged Refošk, Carnera, which has become one of the winery's signature wines.
