Bumbar Tradition

Vodnjan is a town with a rich history, historically known for its inhabitants called "Bumbari." The ancient Romans settled in this area as early as the 2nd century BC. Since then, the tradition of viticulture and olive growing has been nurtured in the Vodnjan area. 

The most significant family winery in Vodnjan is Giacometti-Moscarda, known in the market under the brand "Babos," which is the historical name of a part of Vodnjan where the winery is located. The first generation to start the winery was nona Livia and nono Claudio, succeeded by their daughter Lorella and her husband Guglielmo. Today, the winery is run by the third generation, their sons Matteo, who is an oenologist, and Luca, who oversees marketing.

Babos is now present in the market with 7 wine labels and cultivates 10 hectares of vineyards located in the vicinity of Vodnjan. Malvasia Istriana predominates in the assortment, followed by Teran, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Muscat Rosé. It is worth noting the production of excellent Charmat sparkling wines and the traditional dessert wine of Vodnjan, "Vin de Rosa," obtained from dried berries of Malvasia Istriana and Muscat Rose.
