The Rider from Santa Lucia

The tradition of winemaking and viticulture in the family of Josip Franković has existed since ancient times, leading him to study oenology and work in the former cellar of Motovun. Later, life took him from central Istria to Buje, where he successfully engaged in hospitality and trade. However, his love for winemaking remained deeply ingrained in him, leading him to open a winery in 2012 and restore vineyards on one of the best Istrian vineyard sites, Santa Lucia.

Quickly, the Franković winery became prominent on the Istrian wine scene, now cultivating 15 hectares of vineyards and 7 hectares of olive groves, which Josip loved to traverse on horseback, a childhood passion of his. Alongside the winery, there is a restaurant and wine shop, with Josip receiving assistance in business from his daughter Laura and son Mario. The assortment in the vineyard consists of indigenous grape varieties such as Malvasia Istriana and Teran, as well as Sauvignon Blanc and Cabernet Sauvignon.

They are present in the market with about fifteen wine labels, having received numerous domestic and international awards for their wines. Standouts include fresh Malvasia Istriana, aged Malvasia Istriana "Korona," the dessert wine Passito "Luna d'Oro," aged Teran, and the sparkling wine "Stella."
